Submitting articles to appear in other newsletters is an excellent way to pull in new subscribers. For anyone in a competitive field, it's the best method of all. It costs nothing and brings real results. It's like sending an army of apostles or emissaries out to preach on your behalf. And as many ezines are archived on Web sites, they keep working for you years and years into the future!
Advertising through your own articles has the added benefit of only attracting the BEST kinds of subscribers: those that like what YOU write!
Besides your own, there are hundreds of thousands of other ezines and newsletters published every month. They all need content, so most editors are interested in good articles.
Write informative pieces, and avoid self-promotion. Most email publications prefer articles in the 500 - 800 word range, which really isn't a lot once you get going (but avoid rambling). Don't use overly ornate or technical language, and be sure to double check for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
As an ezine publisher yourself, there are two ways to go about preparing pieces. The most obvious is to write articles for your own title, and send them out after you've used them. The other is to compile and edit existing material from your ezine into an article form, an then send that out (ideal if you seldom write full-blown articles - think of your original content in Introductions, Tips, etc).
Gradually build up a list of publications that reach your target market, and submit frequently for best results. You'll have more success if you take the trouble to personalize submissions with the editors name and title of their publication. You can even offer to write special exclusive or "first run" pieces for ezines that have a large circulation.
Add your details and contact information to the end of the article. Make it a low-key advertisement, and mention any special offers or "freebies" you may have for new subscribers. Keep it brief, usually around five or six lines.
