+ INTRODUCTION +
=====================

Hi,

As you can see, I've decided to do things a little different this
week. It appears that the size of Biz Bits is causing problems
for some subscribers. Whilst this seems particularly true for AOL
users, I have recently learnt that some email clients simply
cannot handle email messages of 30-40K in size.

The changes are all very experimental at this stage. I'm relying
on *your* feedback to let me know what you think of this format.
Whether you love it or hate it, let me know by voting in this
week's poll (now in section 2). Don't forget to include your
comments, good or bad.

Over the last few weeks I've been looking at many different
options for tracking traffic on a web site. In the near future I
plan to add a page to Now Sell! listing all the choices available
and where to find them. In the meantime I thought I'd tell you a
little about the solution I've implemented.

I've always had basic stats, telling me the number of hits, page
views, and allowing coded ad tracking etc. However, I found the
detail provided rather lacking. I needed to know more. I found
many great free scripts, only to discover that each had at least
one requirement that prevented me from using it on my site. Often
this was telnet access, which I don't currently have.

I had looked at Analog as a possible solution long ago, for my
first web site. At the time - I can't remember why - I wasn't
that impressed. However, checking out the latest version of the
program a few weeks ago, it appeared almost ideal.

Analog is a freeware application, that sits on your own computer
an analyzes almost any type of log file you care to throw at it.
It's available for most platforms, and is virtually
'plug-and-play', with minimal set up required. That
notwithstanding, it is extremely customizable. The beauty is that
you can run it 'out of the box' and then make changes via a
configuration file as you become more experienced.

All you need to do is download your log file (it can even work
with a Gzip file) and open it in Analog. The application will
then automatically create a html report, which you simply open in
your browser of choice. The processing is *extremely* fast,
unless you opt to have it resolve DNS numbers into their
respective domain names.

It's the DNS lookup which slows the process down. However, there
is a work-around, a little helper application by the name of
DNSTran. You simply run your log file through DNSTran first and
it will build a database of domain names. Each time you use
DNSTran, it will add to this file. When you run Analog, you
simply request it to reference this database, instead of the web.

So far I'm pleased with the results. I can see how much traffic
different search engines and other sites are sending. I can see
which search terms I'm being found under. I can see which ads are
pulling, and by incorporating a unique graphic file in the ad, I
can even get an idea of the click-through rate. Plus I can see
which pages get the most visits, which are the major entry points
and loads more useful stuff.

All you need to run Analog is a computer and access to download
your web site's log file. You can find Analog at:
http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~sret1/analog/ and DNSTran at:
http://summary.net/soft/dnstran.html

                               <>

I've given Now Sell! a facelift this week and changed the
logo's. Next time you visit, refresh the page to be sure you see
the new images. I've also added some of David Deeson's excellent
articles and 6 new replicator promotional programs.

On the 'paid to surf' front both bepaid and Maxref have been
doing well. For details of these and another 20+ programs that
pay you whilst your online visit

                               <>

In case you missed the last issue, I am giving away over 40MB of
useful software to new subscribers of Biz Bits as a promotion (PC
only at the moment). Since I'm sure you'd also find these
applications useful, it wouldn't be fair not to offer you the
chance to download them yourself too. What you need to do is head
on over to Now Sell! http://www.nowsell.com/ and fill in a Biz
Bits subscription form, using the address you are currently
subscribed with. You can't subscribe yourself twice as long as
you use the same address (though you may get an email from Topica
saying you are already subscribed). After submitting the form,
you will receive the download instructions.

Why don't I just put the URL here?

Well, there are a couple of reasons, but the most important is
that by asking you to fill out the form, I will be notified of
every request, from which I can get an idea of how many
subscribers are actually reading all of Biz Bits every week.
